Sight and Hearing

To avoid their natural predators, horses have developed into a species capable of great speed. For this ability to get out of danger quickly, the horse has also had to develop highly sophisticated senses, in this case, sight and hearing.

Sight

The eyes are positioned high on the head and are set more to the side than the front, offering an extremely wide field of vision. In fact, the horse has an almost 360-degree field of vision, with only minimal blind spots directly in front and behind and in the areas directly alongside the body. Each eye offers a 146-degree monocular field of vision to the side, while there is a 65-degree field of binocular vision to the front of the horse. Binocular vision allows for depth/height perception, which is why a horse will lower their head slightly on approach to a jump, to better gauge the height and distance.
